After nearly five decades of service and more than six years as Queensland’s top cop, Police Commissioner Ian Stewart is hanging up his hat and officially stepped down on July 7.

Ian Stewart was appointed the 19th Commissioner of the Queensland Police Service (QPS) in November 2012, guiding the state through the G20 Summit and Commonwealth Games, Cyclone Debbie and several other disasters.

But the man in blue has origins in black and gold, having graduated from the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) with a Bachelor of Business in Human Resources Management in 1995.

He was awarded the prestigious title of USQ’s Professional Alumnus of the Year in 2015 in recognition of his outstanding achievements within both his professional and personal life.

“Initially my plan (for study) was to equip myself with more options for employment potentially in other industries,” Commissioner Stewart said.

Among his many achievements, the Commissioner holds a Master of Public Policy and Administration and is a Fellow of both the Institute of Public Administration Australia (IPAA) and Australian Institute of Management.

He is also a Graduate Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Leeda Program.

Commissioner Stewart is the recipient of the Australian Fulbright Professional Scholarship, Australian Police Medal, National Emergency Medal, National Police Service Medal, Commissioner’s Award for Meritorious Service, QPS Medal, and the 2010-2011 Queensland Flood and Cyclone Citation and the Queensland Police 150 years Citation.
