The 50th anniversary of the opening of McGregor College at USQ’s Toowoomba campus will be celebrated at a formal reunion dinner on Saturday the 24 July 2021.

Alumni, current residents and USQ staff who have made a connection to McGregor over the past five decades are invited to mark the milestone and reflect on their McGregor memories.

2021 McGregor College Senior Resident Advisor (SRA) Nancy Allen said she’s honoured to be the senior student staff member responsible for the college during this major milestone.

“I’ve been at McGregor for a few years now so I feel so privileged to not only be present for this occasion as a resident but I’m also really proud to be leading the college during such a momentous occasion,” Ms Allen said.

“I’m looking forward to the anniversary dinner in July as I’ve made so many lifelong friends during my time here who have all graduated with different degrees and at different times.

“I’m most excited to see all these students come back and catch up with some old friends as they were a big reason, I decided to stay for more than just my first year.”

To further mark the occasion, the McGregor 50th Anniversary Scholarship Endowment Fund will also be officially launched at the reunion dinner.

USQ Director (Development) Stephen Holden said the endowment fund is designed to provide an annual $2,000 scholarship for a first-year student demonstrating need who has been accepted to live on campus at McGregor College.

“We are reaching out to McGregor College alumni to make a gift to this special anniversary Scholarship Endowment Fund. Scholarships generated from this fund will help ensure future generations of students have the same opportunity to make the lifelong connections on campus as our McGregor alumni did,” Mr Holden said.

“We hope to raise $35,000 by year’s end to ensure we can offer the first scholarship in 2022 – and for many years to follow after that. USQ’s powerful 2:1 gift matching program will help generate a fund of more than $100,000 to support this special perpetual scholarship.”

As a residential scholarship recipient, McGregor College SRA Nancy Allen said she can speak to the impact of an ongoing endowment fund.

“McGregor has provided me with the opportunity to make friends in a new place, meet people who were also studying and given me access to endless support systems. I switched degrees twice before finding something I loved and am almost certain that had I not chosen to live on college, I probably would have given up and dropped out instead of striving to try again,” she said.

“This being said, college fees can add up and not everyone has the opportunity to live here so the support of an endowment fund might just be the reason a future student decides to give university a go.”
